Iran elections: reformists seek political gains but face apathy in key poll

di Staff Geopolitica.info

This coming Friday marks an important parliamentary election day in Iran. Reformists in the country feel this is their opportunity to seize a significant amount of seats, enough to influence the historically conservative nature of the government. Their candidates run on the platform that liberalizing economic markets will grow the economy enough to create substantial improvements in life conditions for regular Iranians. President Rouhani has faced opposition from the conservative party in his efforts to become more open with the international community and the reformist party feels that their presence in parliament could aid in his efforts. Their main problem, however, is convincing people to vote at all. Many Iranians feel apathy towards the democratic process after the 2009 protests, killings, and arrests that followed the rigging of the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
