di Staff Geopolitica.info

Ecuador suffered from the deadliest earthquake since 1987 on Saturday, which killed at least 570 people according to Ecuador’s Risk Management Office. About 155 people still remain missing, over 7,000 have reported injuries, and around 25,000 people have been displaced and remain in shelters. The greatest destruction was to three coastal towns well known for their tourist attractions, Manta, Portoviejo, and Pedernale. The country has continued to feel aftershocks, including a 6.1 magnitude quake off the coast early Wednesday morning. Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has expressed concerns over funding for reconstruction. Today, on prime time television, he proposed various financial measures to raise enough funds, including a tax increase. The country has also deployed 10,000 soldiers and 4,600 police officers to the areas in most need of support.
